Blue Sky’s Epic Movie Review
I remember 2-3 years ago , I came across art work on a blog. It was beautiful art work about a secret project Blue Sky was working. The designs were edgy, appealing and more diverse than usual Blue Sky projects. It was Epic’s art work!
Since the first trailer released I have been really looking forward towards it’s release. The new exciting world in animation films is a great treat.
And after watching Epic, I can tell you for sure that it did not disappoint me at all.
Teenage girl, Mary accidently discovers a secret world which is in midst of war, in order to save the jungle and go back to home, Mary will have to work with Leafmen, the protector of the Forest!
Will she ever able to get back to the real world? Will they able to defend the forest against the dark forces?
Epic movie is based on William Joyce’s book, “The Leafmen and the Brave good bugs”, last year’s awesome Rise of The Guardians also was based upon his book.
William Joyce was definitely one of the reasons behind my excitement, he is a great writer.
Epic is grand scale fantasy adventure from Blue Sky. The world of Leafmen is incredibly beautiful, the visuals are spectacular. The animators, vfx guys, lighting artists have injected magic on each every frame of the movie.
The world is like the most beautiful dream that you don’t want to wake from.

One of the thing that stuck most was that almost every character in Epic is memorable, that rarely happens in movies. It’s only because of brilliant and unique acting choices of amazing character animators of Blue Sky. They have plus the voice performances with beautiful acting, creating surreal characters that you will remember after the movie.
I have always been fan of and have admired Super cartoony feel that Blue Sky animators bring out of Scrat by pushing the animation limits like Chuck Jones. But in Epic the subtle acting scenes left me amazed.
There are many scenes like when Mary meets her dad, when she’s alone in room, the moment Mary with Queen Tara, When Dad founds about the departure of Mary, Mary and Nod quite moments, Ronin also has got many meaningful shots in movie, Nim Galuu scenes are interesting, Mary and the Dog also have beautiful moments and Mandrake has the most powerful scenes.
Mub and Grub is no doubt the best sidekick duo. I mean Grub leaves you laughing so many times.
The three legged dog is animated quiet perfectly. Another amazing thing is where the slow motion and fast moving characters were blended in same scenes, awesome!
Dagda has really less screen space but the animators have done brilliant job on him too, it left me wanting more.
The voice cast couldn’t have been better Amanda Seyfried as Mary, Josh Hutcherson as Nod, Collin Farrell as Ronin, Beyonce’ as Queen Tara. Everyone of them has gave their best while finding out voice of character.
Christopher Waltz’s voice is strong and edgy for Mandrake. Chris O’Dowd who has given voice for Grub stands out. I also loved Steven Tyler as Nim Galuu and Blake Anderson as Dagda.
Jason Sudeikis’s voice also suites for the Dad’s character.
All these characters are memorable, you completely and truly believe in these characters, which is great accomplishment from storytelling perspective.
The character arcs for lead characters, the dynamic relationship between the characters has been portrayed quite effectively.
Cinematography in epic is spectacular, the action , the world , the emotional scenes looked really great on big screen. Action scenes in Epic have been choreographed beautifully. Lighting is also used to influence emotions in the scenes.
The visual structure is also clearly defined between Good and Evil.
The music blends with pace, mood and situations. Everything in Epic is on grand scale, the war, the imagery, beautiful parts of the world, number of characters, the details, flawless animation.
All these things create a meaningful, spectacular journey and it’s like a beautiful dream that you don’t want to wake from. A place where you want go more often.
The character designers have played crucial role into this appealing world and characters. The designs are edgy and stand out. I mean, I just can’t wait to get my hands of Art of Epic
Epic Animated Movie 3D review
Epic doesn’t have the 3D that will poke you in the eye. But director Chris Wedge has created feeling of being in this beautiful unique dimension quit perfectly using 3D. The emotional scenes have depth in them. The world has feeling of existing around us. And action looked incredible.
You must watch this in 3D, it will make you fall in love with this beautiful world.
To sum up, Epic is the best ever Blue Sky animated movie, the brilliant artists of Blue Sky have injected magic on every single frame, the world is incredibly beautiful, action in Epic is fast paced, most importantly the animators have successfully created believable, surreal & memorable characters.
It’s a must watch in 3D on huge screen.
Generally I don’t love the sequels but now I am desperately waiting for the sequel of Epic.
Blue Sky’s Epic has released across India in Hindi/ English 3D/2D a week before it’s domestic release.
